An Oregon City woman distraught over a possible divorce who last year told police she planned to shoot herself but instead opened fire on her husband was sentenced Monday to life in prison.

Lisa Peterson, 57, pleaded guilty to murder after a settlement conference in Clackamas County Circuit Court. She was ordered by a judge to serve 25 years in prison before being eligible for parole in the Feb. 11, 2016, killing of Joseph Peterson, her husband of 16 years.

According to court documents, Peterson told investigators that her 59-year-old husband told her in October 2015 he wanted a divorce. They had been looking for a new home for her on the day of the shooting.

When they returned home, the wife said she grabbed a .380-caliber pistol she bought from Fred Meyer a few weeks earlier and planned to shoot herself in front of her husband, court documents said. She shot him in the chest instead.

Lisa Peterson called 911 and admitting to shooting her husband. She said she tried to kill herself after shooting her husband but the gun jammed.
