Marques Haynes never played in the NBA, but he may have been one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
Haynes, who died May 22 at the age of 89, was once timed at six dribbles per second when he was with the Harlem Globetrotters.
"He dribbled on one knee, in an upright seated position and at full recline," wrote Kevin Sherrington of The Dallas Morning News. "He dribbled in patterns that'd make a test pilot dizzy. He dribbled through traffic you couldn't separate with a siren."
Sherrington recounted a story about Haynes and the Globetrotters' most famous opponent -- the Washington Generals.
"The Globetrotters were playing cards in the locker room before a game when one of the Generals made a surprise entrance," Sherrington wrote.
"'Mr. Haynes, when do we have time to rehearse?' the kid asked.
"'Rehearse what?' Marques said, never looking up from his cards.
"'How do you want me to act like I can't stop you from dribbling?'
"'Kid,' Marques said, 'just do your best to take the ball from me. That's all.'"
Comeback kid
Tim Tebow may be planning the comeback story of the year, but Matt Barkley isn't interested in allowing that tale to unfold.
"He's not taking my reps on the field," Barkley told NJ.com following Thursday's practice.
Tebow and Barkley are competing for roster spots behind Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez on the Philadelphia Eagles' roster.
"He's an arm we need for the team," Barkley added. "Tim's just one of us. He's trying to make the team just like we all are. It hasn't effected my approach to how I feel the team thinks of me or how I'm going out to compete every day."
The Eagles added Tebow this spring. If he makes the team, it would most likely come at the expense of Barkley, which isn't lost on him.
"I'm not looking to compete for the third spot. That is, what it is based off contract numbers," Barkley said. "I'm just looking to play my best. If that winds up being third, then so be it. If it ends up being the first, I'll be happy with that. I can't control how money talks. I'm just going to perform how I see fit."
The Eagles selected Barkley in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He's thrown 50 passes in four games with no touchdowns and seven turnovers.
