MUSEUM CAMPUS — Adler Planetarium will host a free observing party for the partial solar eclipse expected to happen Thursday afternoon.

Adler astronomers will be on hand with telescopes outfitted with solar filters for safe viewing of the solar event from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the institution at 1300 S. Lake Shore Dr.

The event will also include astronomy lectures and hands-on educational activities led by Adler staff.

The solar eclipse is set to begin at 4:36 and peak at 5:43 p.m., when the moon covers approximately half of the sun's diameter. The solar event — and Adler's viewing party — will both end at sunset.
