Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras set up by the police at various points in Thodupuzha have helped reduce crime rates in the town.
The cameras have made it easy for the police to trace vehicles used by criminals, Thodupuzha DySP Sabu Mathew has said.
The police have set up 108 cameras that work round the clock at various vantage points in the town. Mr. Mathew cited the instance of a recent attack by goons in a shop. All the members of the gang could be booked and the vehicle used by them traced, thanks to images captured by the cameras.
Thodupuzha is a town often used by criminals to move to Idukki district or the neighbouring State of Tamil Nadu after committing crimes. In the past few months, many such activities could be traced.
The number of cases involving traffic violations has also decreased with vehicles being monitored. Mr. Mathew said the police were also planning to install CCTV cameras in other towns such as Muvattupuzha.
