Microsoft Surface Book Could Be A MacBook Pro And Surface Pro Killer

All the excitement at Microsoft’s event on Tuesday focused on the Surface Pro 4. However, the device that made jaws drop ended up being the Microsoft Surface Book. It’s a 13.5-inch laptop with a detachable metal keyboard that can be used as a tablet. It also comes with a Surface Pen for digital inking. According to Wired, the Surface Book redefines how PCs are made.

“In fact, it’s hard to name another high-end hybrid laptop that’s quite so enticing. That puts everyone who makes Windows laptops—known as original equipment manufacturers, in trade lingo—in a curious position: What do you do when the partner that supplies your product’s brains releases a superior body?”

Laptopmag even cuts to the chase by calling it a MacBook Pro killer.

“Really, it’s all about the speed. In fact, Microsoft claims that the Core i5 or Core i7-powered Surface Book is twice as fast as the MacBook Pro. The notebook also employes a PCIe SSD, which is at least twice as fast as traditional, SATA-based drives. and comes in capacities ranging from 128GB to 1TB.”

The article adds that the Microsoft notebook adds a very unique fulcrum hinge that allows one to detach the display from the keyboard. The detachment of the screen from the keyboard is not a simple as it is on the Surface Pro 4, a device which PCMag compares to the MacBook Air.

“When it comes to the display, Apple’s MacBook Air is no slouch. It has a 13.3-inch non-touch and non-Retina display, with a 1,440-by-900 resolution. In contrast, the Surface Pro 4 has a beastly 2,736-by-1,824-resolution touch display that’s protected by the latest Corning Gorilla Glass 4.”

According to the Verge, there is a fingerprint sensor on the Type Cover of the Surface Pro 4 and Microsoft’s voice-recognition software, Cortana, is integrated on the device. The Surface Pro 4 is compatible with existing keyboard accessories, though Microsoft is offering a newly improved Type Cover this year. The Surface Pro 4 goes on sale on Monday, October 26. The base unit will cost $899. Comments after the article on the Verge were mostly positive.

“They really seem to have perfected the product this time around. The Pro 3 was great and an extremely solid product, but this seems to really fix the major issues people had with the device,” Cheshire3 enthusiastically stated.

However, as much as people are excited for the Surface Pro 4, it’s the Surface Book that has caused the most excitement on Twitter.

“The new @Microsoft Surface Book looks amazing. One day, one day, I’ll be able to afford one without guilt,” tweeted Mihail Morosan.

“The new Microsoft Surface Book!! what an amazing, amazing laptop. This is the ultimate laptop,” Ali A. Al-Habsi enthusiastically tweeted.

The Surface Book will take a huge bite out of your wallet with the lowest-cost version costing $1,499. This version has 8GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD, an Intel Core i5 Processor, and a 3,000 x 2,000 pixel resolution display. The one with 16GB RAM, a 256GB SSD, and an Intel i7 processor will cost $2099. That may seem like a lot of money, but it sounds like it may be worth it — at least for power users who also want to use their laptop as a tablet.
