Battle against mosquitoes begins in South Jersey

CHERRY HILL, N.J. (WPVI) -- While people in part of South Jersey were sleeping, workers were spraying in hopes of killing mosquitoes and stopping the spread of diseases like West Nile Virus.

Trucks rolled out early Friday morning as the Camden County Mosquito Commission began spraying in an ongoing fight against the little biting bugs.

"We don't expect to win, but we can minimize the battle," said Camden County Freeholder Jeffrey Nash.

It's a year-long effort that, experts say, could be greatly helped if each homeowner did a small part.

"The best prevention is the homeowner who takes care of their property and avoids those pockets of water," said Nash.

Neighbors in Cherry Hill were happy to hear the Mosquito Commission came through, hopeful this stand against the mosquitoes will help then enjoy the summer.

"I think that's great. Great for the community. We can barbecue and not get eaten alive," said John Harakidas.
